Norfolk Island was originally covered in subtropical rainforest, but this is now mostly found only in the national park on the island. Such extensive disruption to the habitat and ecology of the island has put several plant and animal species under threat of extinction.

Controlling invasive weeds and planting natives is ongoing work, saving the unique environment and endemic species on the island. Because of Norfolk Island’s strict biosecurity regulations, all native plants must be grown on the island. Rangers collect seeds from plants in the park and germinate them in our nursery before planting to enhance existing populations or in rehabilitation areas.
Every dollar our supporters gave to this project made a difference to increase the pace of subtropical rainforest rehabilitation at Norfolk Island – that will in turn increase the viable habitat for bird species (many of which are threatened).
